John McCarthy is Professor of Computer Science and Director of the
Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.  His PhD is from Princeton
in Mathematics and he has taught at Princeton, Dartmouth, M.I.T.  His
scientific interests include artificial intelligence (currently problems
of representation of information), computing with symbolic expressions
(He originated the LISP language), time-sharing (currently home computer
terminals), and mathematical theory of computation.

His interest in American technological options arose in connection with
a book he is writing on the possibility of a new wave of inventions
mainly based on information technology.
